Feeling stuck and unsure how to take the first step toward your goals?
Do your dreams feel out of reach because you can’t seem to stay focused?
What if creating a vision board could be the first step toward manifesting the life you’ve always wanted?
Every year or so, I create a new vision board. I’ve been doing this for over a decade, and it never ceases to amaze me how dreams and goals from my boards start manifesting in my life. I first tried it in my mid-twenties as part of a therapy group, and it felt crazy to see my aspirations transform into reality.
If you’re ready to take your dreams to the next level, let’s dive into how to create a vision board and make those dreams happen!
If you are feeling shy about this then make sure you have private time and feel free to keep the board to yourself.
Don’t let others crush your dreams or make you feel they are out of your reach. The whole point is for you to be inspired and not drag negative believers with you. Those voices are not who you want…and sometimes that voice is coming from within yourself. That’s okay…do it anyway. We will tackle those voices later!

1. What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is a powerful tool to visualize your dreams, goals, and aspirations. Essentially, it’s a collage of images, words, and symbols that represent what you want to achieve or attract into your life.
Think of it as a physical representation of your goals—a roadmap that keeps you motivated and focused on what truly matters. Each time you look at it, you’re reminded of what you’re working toward, making your dreams feel tangible and achievable.
2. Why Should I Create a Vision Board?
Does creating a vision board sound childish or too much like therapy art? You’re not alone in thinking that. But let me tell you, it works—and even some of the most successful people swear by it.
Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life, because you become what you believe.
~Oprah Winfrey
In my research for this topic, I was surprised to learn that Steve Harvey and Katy Perry are also fans of vision boards. Steve credits his board with helping him achieve massive career goals, while Katy says her vision board inspired her early musical success.
By manifesting your dreams your board becomes a powerful reminder of how far you’ve come. Looking back on past boards can be a powerful experience – a way to see how far your current achievements were once just dreams. I used to keep mine but now I just take pictures of them.
You can make a vision board throughout the year too! Perhaps one for your birthday, or one for a specific goal. Then you can look at old ones more when you go through the photos on your phone instead of shoving them into a corner when a new one is created. Believe me, it will help you move forward.
You will nurture your creativity by making your board which will also allow you to be open-minded and find innovative ways to achieve your goals.
And, yes, you can carry over dreams from one year to the next. You will find they have evolved into something more.
3. The Psychology Behind Vision Boards
Research has shown that creating a vision board can reduce stress, increase optimism, and help people reflect on their goals. According to Psychology Today, vision boards can even lower depression by increasing positivity and changing the negative thoughts that keep you from moving forward (read more here).
To get the most out of the process, approach it with the right frame of mind. Give yourself the time and space to focus on your dreams. This project might take a few hours, a whole day, even a week or more.
You can also add to your board throughout the year, refining it as your goals become clearer. Remember, this is your journey—there’s no rush.
4. Supplies You Will Need
Creating your vision board is simple and fun, and you likely already have most of the supplies at home. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Glue stick: To secure your images and words to the board.
- Magazines: A variety of magazines will give you plenty of inspiration. The more diverse, the better!
- Scissors: For cutting out images and phrases.
- Poster board: Foam core boards are my favorite because they’re sturdy and durable. I love the dollar store!
- Optional: Colored pencils, markers, or metallic pens (silver or gold ink are amazing). These can help you add personal touches or write specific words that aren’t in your magazines.
Pro Tip: Don’t overlook unconventional sources like fortune cookie fortunes or quotes you’ve been keeping in your wallet – I do!
5. How to Start
Now that you have your supplies, it’s time to start building your vision board. Follow these steps to bring your dreams to life:
- Dream Big: Don’t hold back when brainstorming what to include. This is your “pie in the sky” moment. No dream is too big, too small, or too outrageous for your board. Let your imagination run wild.
- Set the Mood: Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can focus. If you’re worried about judgment, keep your vision board private. This is for you and no one else. Don’t let negative voices—whether from others or from within—hold you back.
- Cut Out What Inspires You: Flip through magazines and tear out anything that catches your eye: words, images, colors, and symbols. Don’t overthink it at this stage. You’ll have time to refine your choices later. This process alone can help uncover dreams and goals you didn’t even realize you had.
Pro Tip: Don’t carefully cut them all out at this point. Once you decide to use an image you will be more exact then. For now just tear them out!
- Organize Your Pieces: Once you’ve gathered your materials, start arranging them on your board. Think about how the images and words connect to your goals. Trim rough edges or write additional words if needed. Use metallic pens to emphasize key phrases or to add your own words of inspiration.
6. Where to Put Your Vision Board
Your vision board should go somewhere you’ll see it every day. This keeps your goals front and center, making it easier to stay motivated. Here are a few ideas:
- Bedroom: Place it near your bed so you can reflect on it each morning and night.
- Bathroom: Protect it with clear contact paper to keep it safe from steam.
- Office or Workspace: Keep it close by as a daily reminder of what you’re working toward.
Be sure to date your vision board so you can look back later and see how your dreams evolved over time. If you’re feeling creative, consider making this a group activity with friends, family, or a special young person in your life. It’s never too early (or too late!) to start dreaming big.
My Final Thoughts
Manifesting your dreams doesn’t happen overnight, but creating a vision board is an inspiring first step. By visualizing your goals, you’re setting an intention to pursue them—and that intention is powerful. As Oprah and Deepak Chopra emphasize, manifesting is about aligning your thoughts, energy, and actions with your dreams (learn more here).
If you’re not sure what your dreams are yet, that’s okay! Read my blog on finding your dreams here. Often, the act of creating a vision board helps reveal them. You’ll be surprised how flipping through magazines and isolating images or words can uncover hidden aspirations.
So, grab your scissors, glue, and magazines, and start building the life you’ve always dreamed of. You’ve got this!
